A Windows Firewall Message Disrupts SynchronEyes Software Communication

SMART Software SynchronEyes classroom management software 7.x, 6.x and 5.x
Operating Systems Windows XP SP2 operating system

Issue

A Windows firewall message disrupts communication between the teacher’s computer and students’ computers.

Cause

Your operating system’s Internet connection firewall is active, and it’s disrupting communication between computers.

Solution

Note

These solutions are for the Windows XP (SP2) operating system. For solutions for the Windows XP (SP1) operating system, see document 98337.

To prevent the Windows firewall message from appearing and disrupting communications, perform one of the following:

  • Disable your Internet connection firewall.

  • Set your firewall to allow SynchronEyes software communications.

  • Open and enable your SynchronEyes software ports.

Important

  • See your system administrator before changing Internet connection firewall settings.

  • Log on to your computer with administrator privileges before completing the following solutions.

To disable the Internet connection firewall

  1. Click Start > Control Panel.

    The Windows Control Panel appears.

  2. Double-click Network Connections.

The Network Connections dialog box appears.

  3. Double-click Local Area Connection.

The Local Area Connection Status dialog box appears.

  4. Click Properties.

The Local Area Connection Properties dialog box appears.

  5. Click the Advanced tab.

  6. Click Settings.

The Windows Firewall dialog box appears.

  7. Click the General tab.

  8. Select Off (Not Recommended).

  9. Click OK to save your changes and close the Windows Firewall dialog box.

  10. Click OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box.

  11. Close the Local Area Connection Status and Network Connections dialog boxes.

To set your firewall to allow SynchronEyes software communications

Note

You must set your firewall to allow both SynchronEyes teacher-station and student-station software communications.

  1. Click Start > Control Panel.

    The Windows Control Panel appears.

  2. Double-click Windows Firewall.

The Windows Firewall dialog box appears.

  3. Click the Exceptions tab.

  4. Set your firewall to allow SynchronEyes teacher-station software communications:

  5. Click Add Program.

The Add a Program dialog box appears.

  6. Browse to, and select, SynchronEyesTeacher.exe.

  7. Click Open.

  8. Click OK.

SynchronEyes teacher-station software appears in the Programs list in the Windows Firewall dialog box.

  9. Select SynchronEyes teacher-station software in the Programs list.

  10. Set your firewall to allow SynchronEyes student-station software communications:

  17. Clear the Don’t allow exceptions check box.

    Note
